An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of swapping a plastic card, you scan a QR code and your phone downloads the plan. Here's how to set one up, and what to do if something doesn't work.
Before you start
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Your phone needs internet to download the eSIM.
- Check your phone is compatible and unlocked. Dial *#06#. If you see an EID, you're good. See our compatible phones list.
- Pick your plan. Browse all destinations or get a Global eSIM for multi-country trips.
- Install it before you travel. With most plans, the validity only starts when the eSIM first connects at your destination. Your plan page shows whether yours also starts automatically after a set number of days.
Install on iPhone
- Open the QR code from your Globbi order, on another screen or printed.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR Code and scan it. (Apple's official eSIM guide)
- Tap Continue and wait a moment while it activates.
- Label the new line, for example "Travel", and keep your primary line as default for calls and iMessage.
Tip: On iPhone with iOS 17.4 or later, you can skip the QR code. Open your order on the iPhone itself and tap Install directly on iPhone.
Install on Android
Menus vary a little by brand, but the steps are similar:
- Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager).
- Tap Add eSIM or Download a SIM. (Google Pixel help)
- Scan the QR code from your order.
- Confirm the download and name the line "Travel".
- Leave the new line switched off until you travel, if your phone lets you.
When you land
- Turn on your travel eSIM line.
- Set it as your mobile data line.
- Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM. This is required even though you're not paying roaming fees.
- Turn off data roaming on your home line, to avoid charges.
Within a minute or two you should see a local network name and signal bars. Off on a trip soon? Don't miss our travel connectivity checklist.
Troubleshooting
"No internet" or no signal after landing
- Check data roaming is on for the travel eSIM.
- Make sure the travel eSIM is selected as your mobile data line.
- Toggle Airplane mode on and off, or restart your phone.
- Go to network selection, turn off Automatic, and pick a network manually.
The QR code won't scan
Use manual entry instead. In your order, open the Manual tab and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code into your phone's "Enter details manually" option.
I deleted the eSIM by accident
Most eSIMs can only be installed once, so don't delete one you still need. If it happens, contact our support team with your order number and we'll do our best to help.
Frequently asked questions
Will installing an eSIM remove my normal SIM or number?
No. Your normal SIM or eSIM stays on your phone. Most modern phones can hold several eSIMs and use two lines at once.
Can I install the eSIM days before my trip?
Yes, and we recommend it. Most plans only start counting when the eSIM connects at your destination. Check your plan's details for any automatic start date.
Can I move my eSIM to a new phone?
Usually not. A travel eSIM is tied to the phone it's installed on, so install it on the phone you'll travel with.
