Staying online in Japan
Japan runs on your phone: train transfers, restaurant queues, translation apps and the odd vending-machine mystery. Mobile data makes all of it easy, and Japan’s networks are some of the fastest and most reliable in the world.
Mobile coverage
Coverage is excellent in cities, on most train lines and even in many subway stations. Signal can drop in long Shinkansen tunnels and in remote mountain areas such as parts of the Japan Alps, but it comes back quickly.
Main networks:NTT Docomoau (KDDI)SoftBankRakuten Mobile
Your Globbi eSIM connects to a partner network in Japan. Coverage depends on location, like any mobile network.
Good to know in Japan
- Google Maps is brilliant for Japanese public transport, including platform numbers and live train times.
- Add a transit card such as Suica or PASMO to your phone wallet (where supported) to tap through gates.
- Free Wi-Fi exists in stations and convenience stores, but it often needs a sign-up. Mobile data is far less hassle.
- Translation apps that read menus through your camera use quite a bit of data, so pick a slightly bigger plan if you rely on them.

Can I use hotspot with the Japan eSIM?
Yes. Hotspot/tethering is allowed on all Japan plans, so you can share data with your laptop or travel companions.
Is the unlimited Japan eSIM really unlimited?

Do I get a phone number with the Japan eSIM?

Will my phone work with a Japan eSIM?
Most unlocked phones from 2019 onwards support eSIM, including iPhone XR and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and Google Pixel 3 and newer. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID, your phone supports eSIM.
Is an eSIM better than pocket Wi-Fi in Japan?
For most travellers, yes. There is no device to collect, charge or return, and your data is always on your phone. Pocket Wi-Fi can make sense for a large group sharing one connection.
Will my eSIM work on the Shinkansen?
Mostly, yes. You will have data for much of the journey, with short drops in longer tunnels.
